Happy Holidays!
As the New Year approaches, it is a good time to take stock of
all the wonderful things that we did in the past year, as well
as the lessons we learned. The following inspirational quote by
Becky Erdelen is a good reminder of some of the things we may
have learned.
The New Year is a traditional time for making resolutions about
habits we can improve upon in the coming year. To that end, I've
written a couple of articles that provide some tips about getting
better organized.
This time of year is a good time to take a vacation. The time
off can be well spent doing any or all of the following:
relaxing and recharging your batteries; visiting with friends
and family, especially those you don't get to see at other times
of the year; catching up on the reading that you've been meaning
to get around to; and doing things that are inspirational.
I've been thinking about ways to improve About-the-web.com for
the coming year. Some of the ideas I've come up with include:
adding more information about money making programs and contests
on the Internet; improving the Valuable Information section; and
adding a page that features web sites that offer discounts or
advice on saving money. If you have any ideas, please send them
to me.
About-the-web.com is a resource for new users to the Internet.
Our mission is to provide newcomers a place to learn about
browsers, e-mail programs, search engines, making money,
avoiding scams, creating and promoting web sites, and some
simple tips for a better web surfing experience. More advanced
users will find useful links to other sites.
We welcome your comments, questions and suggestions. We also
welcome any tips, tricks or great web sites that you would like
to share. Send me an e-mail and we'll publish all the most
relevant ones in this newsletter.
Welcome to the fourth issue of What's New About-the-Web! We
intend that you find this newsletter interesting and inspiring.
Please pass it along to a friend.
Sincerely,
Garth Catterall-Heart

THINGS I HAVE LEARNED
By: Becky Erdelen
I've learned...
that you can do something in an instant
that will give you heartache for life.
I've learned...
that it's taking me a long time
to become the person I want to be.
I've learned...
that you should always leave loved ones
with loving words.
It may be the last time you see them.
I've learned...
that you can keep going
long after you can't.
I've learned...
that we are responsible for what we do,
no matter how we feel.
I've learned...
that either you control your attitude
or it controls you.
I've learned....
that regardless of how hot and steamy
a relationship is at first, the passion fades
and there had better be something else
to take its place.
I've learned...
that heroes are the people
who do what has to be done
when it needs to be done,
regardless of the consequences.
I've learned...
that money is a lousy way of keeping score.
I've learned...
that my best friend and I can do anything
or nothing and have the best time.
I've learned...
that sometimes the people you expect
to kick you when you're down
will be the ones to help you get back up.
I've learned...
that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry,
but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.
I've learned...
that true friendship continues to grow,
even over the longest distance.
Same goes for true love.
I've learned...
that just because someone doesn't love you
the way you want them to
doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.
I've learned...
that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences
you've had and what you've learned from them
and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.
I've learned...
that your family won't always be there for you.
It may seem funny,
but people you aren't related to
can take care of you and love you
-- and teach you to trust people again.
Families aren't biological.
I've learned...
that no matter how good a friend is,
they're going to hurt you every once in a while
and you must forgive them for that.
I've learned...
that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.
I've learned...
that no matter how bad your heart is broken
the world doesn't stop for your grief.
I've learned...
that our background and circumstances
may have influenced who we are,
but we are responsible for who we become.
I've learned...
that just because two people argue,
it doesn't mean they don't love each other
And just because they don't argue,
it doesn't mean they do.
I've learned...
that we don't have to change friends
if we understand that friends change.
I've learned...
that you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret.
It could change your life forever.
I've learned...
that two people can look at the exact same thing
and see something totally different.
I've learned...
that your life can be changed in a matter of hours
by people who don't even know you.
I've learned...
that even when you think you have no more to give,
when a friend cries out to you,
you will find the strength to help.
I've learned...
that credentials on the wall
do not make you a decent human being.

Reduce Your Holiday Stress
With Christmas right around the corner and the New year
following closely behind, this time of year can be hectic and
stressful for many people. Effective time management is critical
if you are going to accomplish everything you want to do in the
next few weeks. For many, keeping track of your spending is also
important, in order to minimize stress, both during and after the
holidays. Here are some ideas about making your holidays less
stressful and more enjoyable.
Planning is particularly important at this time of year. There
is shopping to be done, parties to organize and attend,
decorations to put up, vacations to plan and enjoy, etc. Make a
list of all these things and then prioritize them. Write down a
date by which each activity needs to be done. Also, make notes
about how much each item on your list might cost. This will help
in determining where you can save time and money if needed.
Many things on your list will need to be broken down into
several steps. For instance if you're going on vacation, you may
need to make travel, lodging and other reservations by particular
dates. The more advance planning you do, the more time you will
have to enjoy the vacation, because you will not have to worry
about those details.
The end of the year is a good time to do some financial
planning as well. Consult your accountant and see if there are
any last minute contributions, investments, purchases or sales
you need to make before the end of the year.
If you have your own business, take extra time to make your
customers feel appreciated. This may mean sending cards,
additional services like gift wrapping, longer hours and lots of
holiday cheer. A friendly smile and some extra effort will go
along way toward creating a happy experience for both you and
your customers. They'll also be more likely to return during the
coming year.
Another important financial consideration, for many during the
holidays, is planning for and keeping track of your spending.
This is especially important with regards to credit spending. It
is very easy to just charge everything and then be shocked when
you get the bills in January. Planning for and keeping track of
your purchases, will help minimize the amount of debt you will
incur. It will also help to lessen the stress of shopping,
because you will know how much you can comfortably spend.
If you happen to have more time than money, you can make cards
and gifts instead of buying them. Often the presents you create
are the most cherished by their recipients, because of the amount
of time and thought you put into them. Writing a holiday letter
is a good way to keep in touch with friends you may not have
seen or spoken to for a long time. Letters can be sent in place
of cards, and for much less money too.
By planning your time and spending carefully, you can be more
relaxed about all the things you need to get done. You will also
be able to enjoy all the festivities, and the time you have off
much more. Being more relaxed will help both you and the people
around you, to get the most enjoyment out of the holiday season.

Getting Organized in the New Year
Are you ready for the New Year? Have you given any thought to
your New Years resolutions? Would you like to make more money?
How about having more free time for vacations or enjoying
friends and family? Getting organized can help free up that
spare time and make you happier and more productive.
Making lists can be an effective tool for getting better
organized. Begin by listing everything you normally do. Then add
to the list all the things you wish you had time for. Here are
some suggestions for important things to add to your list:
eating, sleeping, exercise, time with friends and family, and
inspiration (this could be time spent in prayer, meditation,
inspirational reading, or journaling).
Prioritizing your list is the next step. Remember that without
the proper amount of food and sleep, that you will probably not
have the energy to accomplish as much as you would like to.
Taking time to exercise will also increase the amount of energy
you have, and give you the mental clarity you need, to be at
your maximum efficiency.
Next create a schedule for a typical week. For the next month or
so, keep a journal or log of how much time you spend on all of
your daily activities. Try to stick to your schedule, but even
if you can't, make notes about how you are spending your time.
At the end of each week, look over your journal and determine
what things you do, which take up your time, but are not as
important as other things on your list.
As you go through this process, make adjustments to your
schedule, trying to include more important activities. For
instance you may find that you are spending time surfing the
Internet or watching TV that could be better spent reading or
exercising. The discipline of following a schedule and keeping a
journal of your activities, may be just what you need, to get
into a routine of doing things that increase your energy and
productivity.
Do you spend a lot of time worrying about your finances? Keeping
track of the money you spend may be a good next step. By tracking
your expenses you can then prioritize the things you're spending
money on. Then you can decide which things you can live without
and not worry so much about how you are spending your money. This
will free up even more time and energy for more important tasks.
If you have your own business, keeping closer track of the time
you spend on various activities, and all of your expenses, may
increase your profits because you will be able to identify where
you can spend your time more effectively.
Remember that better organization, plus the discipline to do the
things that produce the best results, will yield increased
productivity, and more time for recreation and happy times.
